Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Adverbs are the describing words students often skip over when reading and forget when writing. This worksheet builds their adverb radar by showing the word in context next to the verb it modifies.

Section A pairs each verb with the adverb that describes it (e.g., ‘walked slowly’) so students can hear how the adverb answers how, when, or where. The 12 items deliberately mix -ly adverbs with non-ly ones (everywhere, yesterday, upstairs, later) so students don’t rely on the -ly tag alone.

Section B places adverbs inside full sentences. Two of the eight items use non-ly adverbs (soon, high, already) to keep students from guessing. Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students how, when, and where you walked into the room.

Have students work Section A independently as a quick warm-up.

Discuss the non-ly adverbs in Section A (everywhere, yesterday, upstairs, later) as a class.

Have students complete Section B and use page 2 to self-check.

Pair with the Identifying Adjectives Worksheet to compare describing words for verbs vs. nouns.
