Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Adjectives are the descriptive words students reach for the moment they want their writing to come alive. This worksheet practices identifying them, the foundational step before students can use them with intention in their own sentences.

Section A pairs each adjective with the noun it modifies (e.g., ‘a soft pillow’) so students can hear the adjective doing its job. Section B places adjectives inside full sentences with subjects, verbs, and prepositional phrases, so students have to listen carefully to find the descriptive word.

Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid. Two Section B items have more than one valid adjective; the key lists one with the alternative in parentheses.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students to add a describing word to a noun you say (e.g., ‘pencil’, ‘cloud’).

Have students work Section A independently as a quick warm-up.

Read Section B item 13 aloud and model how to skip the verb and prepositional phrase to find the adjective.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Identifying Adverbs Worksheet to compare describing words for nouns vs. verbs.
