About this worksheet
A gerund is a verb form that ends in -ing and is used as a noun. Although it comes from a verb, a gerund names an activity and can do any job a noun can – it can be the subject or the thing that receives the action. This worksheet teaches students to spot gerunds and tell them from ongoing -ing verbs.
Section A gives eight sentences (Swimming keeps you healthy; My favorite hobby is drawing) and asks students to write the gerund in each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘Reading is fun’ and ‘She enjoys painting’, gerunds not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define a gerund, use ‘jumping’ as a subject, explain how a gerund differs from an ongoing -ing verb, and write a gerund of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding verbals.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast a gerund with an ongoing -ing verb.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this -ing word doing a noun’s job?’
Work Section B item 10 together: use ‘jumping’ as a subject in a sentence.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Verb Tenses Worksheet or the Action Verbs Worksheet for a verbs mini-unit.
