Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
An embedded question is a question placed inside another sentence, and it uses statement word order instead of the inversion of a direct question. This worksheet teaches students to turn direct questions into polite embedded ones such as ‘Can you tell me where the station is?’
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box compares a direct and an embedded question. Section A has eight direct questions to rewrite as embedded clauses. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions about word order and politeness.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with the embedded clause for every item and sample responses. The worksheet pairs well with the Direct and Indirect Speech and Sentence Types worksheets.
