Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
The direct object is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb – find it by asking the verb plus ‘what?’ The indirect object tells to whom or for whom the action is done and comes before the direct object. This worksheet teaches students to find the direct object first, then recognize an indirect object when one is present.
Section A gives eight sentences (the chef baked a cake; Tom threw the ball) and asks students to write the direct object in each. The reference box teaches both objects with ‘Maria kicked the ball’ and ‘He gave his sister a gift’ examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to find a direct object and explain how, find an indirect object, name the question a direct object answers, and write a sentence with both objects. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward analyzing complete sentences and sentence patterns.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model asking ‘verb what?’ to find the direct object.
Complete Section A independently – have students say the verb plus ‘what?’ for each.
Work Section B item 9 together: find the direct object in ‘Dad bought a sandwich’.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Subject and Predicate Worksheet or the Prepositional Phrases Worksheet for a sentence-parts mini-unit.
