About this worksheet
Both dashes and parentheses set off extra information you could remove and still have a complete sentence. A dash adds emphasis or a sudden break, while parentheses tuck in a quieter aside. This worksheet helps students recognize both marks and understand the difference in effect.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences – some with a dash and some with parentheses – and asks students to write dash or parentheses. The reference box teaches each mark with a ‘My brother’ example that is not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks for the difference between the two marks, whether the set-off words are removable, a rewrite using parentheses, and an original sentence with a dash. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on commas and other punctuation.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and compare the dash and parentheses examples.
Complete Section A independently – have students find the mark around the extra information.
Discuss why a writer might choose a dash for emphasis.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Commas in a Series Worksheet or the Colons and Semicolons Worksheet.
