About this worksheet
A coordinating conjunction joins two equal parts – two words, two phrases, or two complete sentences. There are seven, remembered as FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. Each one shows a relationship: and adds, but and yet show contrast, or gives a choice, and so shows a result. This worksheet helps students pick the right conjunction for the meaning they want.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences with a blank and asks students to write the FANBOYS word that fits best. The reference box teaches the idea with picnic and rainy-day examples that are not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students to list the FANBOYS words, explain what coordinating conjunctions join, and write sentences using but and so. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward compound sentences and varied sentence structure.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and match each example to its FANBOYS word.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘add, contrast, choice, or result?’
Work Section B item 11 together: write a sentence using but.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; some blanks accept more than one FANBOYS word.
