About this worksheet
Coordinate adjectives are two or more adjectives that equally describe the same noun, and they need a comma between them, as in a cold, rainy day. Two quick tests catch them: if you can place ‘and’ between the adjectives, or reverse their order, and the phrase still sounds right, they are coordinate. Cumulative adjectives such as ‘three small dogs’ fail both tests and take no comma. This worksheet helps students apply both tests.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences, and students decide whether the adjectives need a comma or no comma. The reference box teaches both tests and shows a short Examples block with one coordinate example and one cumulative example, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define coordinate adjectives, describe the two tests, punctuate a given phrase, and write their own correctly punctuated sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on identifying adjectives and ordering adjectives.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model the and-test and reverse-order test.
Complete Section A independently – have students try both tests on each pair.
Discuss why number and material adjectives are cumulative and take no comma.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Ordering Adjectives Worksheet or the Commas in a Series Worksheet.
