Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A conjunctive adverb is an adverb such as however, therefore, meanwhile, or otherwise that connects two ideas and shows how they relate. When it joins two sentences, it usually follows a semicolon and a comma. This worksheet helps students recognize conjunctive adverbs and tell them apart from coordinating conjunctions.

Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to write yes or no for each. In half, a conjunctive adverb follows a semicolon; in the other half, a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, or so does the joining. The reference box teaches both connectors with an ‘It rained’ example.

Section B on page 2 asks what a conjunctive adverb is, to name two, what punctuation comes before one, and to write a sentence using however. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on conjunctions and semicolons.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and contrast ‘however’ with ‘but.’

Complete Section A independently – have students notice the semicolon before a conjunctive adverb.

Discuss the relationships conjunctive adverbs can show (contrast, cause, addition, time).

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Coordinating Conjunctions Worksheet or the Colons and Semicolons Worksheet.
