About this worksheet
Conjunctions are the small words that hold writing together. AND adds, BUT shows a contrast, OR offers a choice, and SO shows a result. Once students learn to match the right conjunction to the meaning, their sentences sound smoother and their ideas connect more clearly.
Section A drills 12 short word pairs and mini-cause-effect phrases. Students fill the blank with AND, BUT, OR, or SO. Section B raises the difficulty: each item is a full sentence missing the conjunction, and students must read the whole sentence to pick the word that matches the meaning.
Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking. The reference box on page 1 names the seven coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) and explains the four most common.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to say one sentence using each of AND, BUT, OR, and SO.
Work Section A independently as a 4-5 minute warm-up.
Move to Section B and read item 13 together; show how the meaning of the sentence determines which conjunction fits.
Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Sentence Types Worksheet for additional sentence-level grammar practice.
