Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A conditional sentence tells what happens if a condition is met. It has an if-clause (the condition) and a result clause (what follows), and the verb forms show whether the situation is real and likely or imagined and unlikely. This worksheet helps students match the right verb to each kind of conditional.

Section A on page 1 gives eight conditional sentences, and students choose the verb that correctly completes each one. The reference box teaches real and unreal conditionals with different examples, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 asks students to name the two parts of a conditional, contrast real and unreal conditionals, choose a verb, and write a conditional of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the subjunctive mood and complex sentences.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and underline the if-clause in each example.

Complete Section A independently – have students check what the other clause signals.

Discuss how the verb form changes for a real versus an imagined situation.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Subjunctive Mood Worksheet or the Complex Sentences Worksheet.
