Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A sentence has a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what it does). A compound subject has two or more subjects sharing one predicate (Maria and Leo walked to school); a compound predicate has two or more verbs sharing one subject (The dog barked and wagged its tail). This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart and to build them.

Section A gives eight sentences and asks whether each has a compound subject or a compound predicate, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches both with its own examples and the test (two who-or-whats versus one subject doing two actions) not reused in the items.

Section B is productive: students combine sentence pairs into one sentence with a compound subject or a compound predicate as directed. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds sentence fluency and complements compound sentences.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and underline the two subjects in one example and the two verbs in another.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘two subjects or two verbs?’

Work Section B item 1 together: combine ‘Ducks swim in the pond’ and ‘Geese swim in the pond’ into a compound subject.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any correct combination.

Pair with the Subject and Predicate Worksheet or the Compound Sentences Worksheet for a sentence mini-unit.
