About this worksheet
Sentences come in four structures built from independent and dependent clauses: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. This worksheet helps students recognize and build all four types.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences – one independent clause, joined clauses, clauses with a ‘because’ or ‘after,’ and combinations – and asks students to write simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. The reference box defines each structure.
Section B on page 2 asks students to explain independent versus dependent clauses, tell how many independent clauses a compound-complex sentence has, and write a compound and a compound-complex sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on compound and complex sentences.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and underline clauses in a sample sentence.
Complete Section A independently – have students count independent and dependent clauses.
Discuss how compound-complex sentences combine both compound and complex.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Compound Sentences Worksheet or the Complex Sentences Worksheet.
