About this worksheet
Recognizing fragments is the foundation skill for editing one’s own writing. This worksheet practices it in two steps: first identification, then repair. The goal is for students to internalize the question ‘does this have a subject AND a verb AND a complete thought?’
Section A presents 12 short items, alternating between complete sentences and fragments. Students label each one C or F. Section B raises the difficulty: students read a fragment (e.g., ‘Under the wooden bridge.’) and write a complete sentence that includes those words.
The reference box at the top of page 1 lists the four requirements for a complete sentence and shows one complete sentence and two different fragments (missing-subject and missing-verb). Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid; Section B accepts any sentence that uses the fragment phrase inside a complete sentence.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and chant the four requirements together (subject, verb, complete thought, end punctuation).
Read Section A item 1 aloud and have students explain why it is C or F.
Have students complete Section A independently, then move to Section B.
Share a few Section B answers aloud so students hear different ways to complete the same fragment.
Pair with the Subject and Predicate Worksheet for the underlying parts-of-a-sentence skill.
