About this worksheet
Dates and addresses are two places where commas are not optional. A reader needs the comma between the day and the year (May 4, 2026) and between the city and the state (Austin, Texas). When the city and state land inside a sentence, students also need a second comma right after the state. This worksheet pulls those three small rules into one focused practice.
Section A is a 12-item warm-up in a clean two-column grid. Half of the items are dates with no comma between the day and the year, and half are place names with no comma between the city and the state. Students rewrite each item on the line with the comma added. Section B raises the difficulty with eight full sentences, including two that contain both a date and a city-state pair.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A answers print in a two-column grid; Section B answers print on full-width lines so the longer rewritten sentences read cleanly. The reference box on page 1 teaches both rules with an October 12, 2024 date example and a Boston, Massachusetts address example.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and write the two example items on the board so students can see the date rule and the address rule side by side.
Work Section A as a quick warm-up; remind students that the comma always sits between the day and the year, and between the city and the state.
Move to Section B and read item 13 aloud; show students that a date or a city-state inside a sentence keeps the original comma AND adds a comma after the year or after the state.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
