About this worksheet

A series is a list of three or more items inside a sentence, and commas are what hold the list together. Without commas, a reader can lose track of where one item ends and the next begins. Once students can hear the small pauses between items, they read more smoothly and their own writing starts to sound less crowded.

Section A is a 12-item warm-up in a clean two-column grid. Each item is a short list of three nouns, adjectives, or verbs, and students rewrite the list with commas between the items, including the comma before AND. Section B raises the difficulty with eight full sentences. Students rewrite each sentence on the lines provided, adding every missing comma.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A answers print in a two-column grid for fast spot-checking; Section B answers print on full-width lines so the rewritten sentences read cleanly. The reference box on page 1 teaches the rule with a short red, blue, and green example plus a recess verb example.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students chant the rule together: a list of three or more uses commas between the items.

Work Section A independently as a five-minute warm-up; each list is just three items.

Move to Section B and read item 13 aloud; show students how the same comma rule still applies once the list is inside a full sentence.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
