Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A comma splice happens when two complete sentences (independent clauses) are joined with only a comma, which is too weak to hold them together. The three fixes are a period, a joining word (and, but, or, so) after the comma, or a semicolon. This worksheet isolates the comma-splice error and its repairs.

Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to mark each comma splice or correct (for example, ‘The bell rang, the students hurried to class’ is a comma splice, while ‘I like apples, oranges, and grapes’ uses a correct list comma). The reference box explains the error and the three fixes with examples different from the eight Section A sentences.

Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define a comma splice, explain why a comma is too weak, name the three fixes, and repair two splices. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill sharpens the Run-On Sentences and comma punctuation worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and show the three fixes on one example.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘are two full sentences joined by only a comma?’

Have students repair the two splices in Section B and compare fixes.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Run-On Sentences Worksheet or the Commas in a Series Worksheet.
