Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Colons and semicolons look alike but do different jobs. A colon introduces a list or explanation after a complete sentence (Pack three things: a hat, water, and a snack). A semicolon joins two complete, closely related sentences where a period would also work (It was raining hard; we stayed inside). This worksheet teaches when to use each mark.

Section A gives eight sentences with a blank and asks whether a colon or a semicolon belongs there, balanced four and four. Half introduce a list or explanation (colon) and half join two complete sentences (semicolon). The reference box teaches both jobs with its own examples not reused in the items.

Section B is corrective: students rewrite four sentences, adding a colon or a semicolon (and any needed commas) where it belongs. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is an upper-grade punctuation move that strengthens formal writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and contrast the colon-before-a-list example with the semicolon-joining example.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is a list coming, or are these two complete sentences?’

Work Section B item 1 together: add a colon before the list of school supplies.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Commas in a Series Worksheet or the Complex Sentences Worksheet for a punctuation mini-unit.
