About this worksheet
Capital letters follow clear rules: capitalize the first word of a sentence, the word I, proper nouns (specific people, places, and things), the days of the week and months of the year, and the important words in a title. This worksheet teaches the core rules and has students both name and apply them.
Section A gives eight capital letters in context (the T in ‘The dog barked,’ the M in ‘We met Maria,’ the I in ‘My friend and I left’) and asks students to name the rule that applies: sentence start, the word I, proper noun, or day or month. The reference box lists the rules and the do-not-capitalize exceptions with its own examples not reused as items.
Section B raises the difficulty: students rewrite four sentences with several missing capitals each, including a name, a place, a month, a day, and a title. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is essential for clear, correct writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and list the five capitalize-always cases.
Complete Section A independently – have students name the rule for each capital.
Work Section B item 1 together: ‘my family visited paris in august’ needs My, Paris, and August.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Common and Proper Nouns Worksheet or the Proofreading Worksheet for a writing-mechanics mini-unit.
