About this worksheet
An adjective changes its ending to compare: add -er for two things, add -est for three or more. Young writers usually meet this as a pattern first — big, bigger, biggest — and this worksheet works on the pattern and the choice between the two endings, before more and most are introduced.
Section A gives eight three-form patterns with one word missing. Two of them ask for the base word rather than an ending, so the exercise cannot be finished by working left to right. Section B is where the pattern gets used: six sentences, each offering the -er and the -est word, decided by how many things are being compared. Section C asks for five sentences of the student’s own.
Three spelling changes are taught in the reference box and exercised across the sections: most words simply add the ending, a short word ending in one vowel and one consonant doubles its last letter (hot, hotter, hottest), and a word ending in y changes the y to i (funny, funnier, funniest).
