About this worksheet
An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames or explains the noun right next to it, giving the reader more information. When it is extra information, an appositive is set off with commas, one before and one after. This worksheet teaches students to find appositives and use them to add detail.
Section A gives eight sentences (My teacher, Mrs. Reed, is kind; Rover, a playful puppy, chewed my shoe) and asks students to write the appositive phrase. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘My brother, a doctor,’ and ‘Paris, the capital of France,’ phrases not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define an appositive, add one to a sentence, name the punctuation that sets it off, and write a sentence with an appositive. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill helps students add detail smoothly.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and underline the noun, then the phrase that renames it.
Complete Section A independently – have students find the phrase between the commas.
Work Section B item 10 together: add an appositive to a sentence as a class.
