About this worksheet
The apostrophe is small, but it does two big jobs in writing. In a contraction, the apostrophe replaces the missing letters when two words become one (do not becomes don’t). In a singular possessive, the apostrophe plus s shows what belongs to a person or thing (the dog’s leash). This worksheet keeps those two jobs cleanly separated so students do not confuse them.
Section A is a 12-item drill in a four-column grid. Each item shows two words, and students write the matching contraction on the line, including irregular forms like won’t and let’s. Section B steps up: eight items each show a phrase plus a bracketed noun, and students rewrite it as a singular possessive (Carlos’s bike, the bird’s song).
Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid for fast spot-checking. The reference box on page 1 shows one contraction example (do not / don’t) and one possessive example (Mia’s book), so students can see both apostrophe jobs side by side before they start. Plural possessives (boys’) are intentionally left out so the worksheet stays focused at the grade 3-4 level.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and write the two example pairs on the board so students can see contractions and possessives side by side.
Work Section A as a quick warm-up; remind students that the apostrophe lands exactly where the missing letters used to be.
Move to Section B and read item 13 aloud; show students how to add apostrophe + s to a singular noun to make it possessive.
Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.
