Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Some adverbs tell when something happens (adverbs of time, such as today and soon) and others tell where it happens (adverbs of place, such as here and outside). Both kinds add useful detail to the verb. This worksheet helps students sort adverbs into these two everyday categories.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences, and students decide whether the bold adverb is an adverb of time or place. The reference box teaches both kinds with different examples, so the assessed items stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to explain what each kind of adverb tells, classify one more adverb in a sentence, and write a sentence with an adverb of time. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on identifying adverbs and adverbs of frequency and manner.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘when?’ or ‘where?’ for each example.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask whether the adverb answers when or where.
Discuss other everyday adverbs of time and place students know.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Adverbs of Frequency Worksheet or the Adverbs of Manner Worksheet.
