About this worksheet
An adverb of manner tells how an action is done and answers the question ‘how?’ Many are formed by adding -ly to an adjective (quick becomes quickly), though a few do not end in -ly, such as well and fast. This worksheet teaches students to find the adverb of manner by locating the verb and asking how the action happened.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to write the adverb of manner from each (for example, ‘The children waited patiently’ gives patiently). The reference box defines adverbs of manner with example words different from the eight Section A sentences, and notes that words telling when or how often are different kinds of adverbs.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students explain what an adverb of manner tells, name the question it answers, and write their own sentences. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on adverbs and contrasts with adverbs of frequency.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model finding the verb, then asking ‘how?’
Complete Section A independently, writing the adverb of manner from each sentence.
Discuss Section B item 14 (manner vs time adverbs) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Adverbs Worksheet or the Adverbs of Frequency Worksheet.
