Adjectives — Describing Nouns and Pronouns

What Is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives tell you what a person, place, or thing is like. They can tell you about size, color, number, or kind. Adjectives make sentences more descriptive and more interesting.

For example, the word dog is a noun. But what kind of dog is it? What color is it? How big is it? If you say “the big, brown, furry dog,” you have used three adjectives to describe the dog. The words big, brown, and furry are all adjectives.

Adjectives can also tell about number. In the sentences “There are seventeen students in our class” and “We had two games on the same day,” the words seventeen and two are adjectives because they tell how many.

Using Adjectives in Writing

Adjectives usually come before the noun they describe, as in “a tall building” or “the red apple.” They can also come after linking verbs like is, are, was, and seems. For example: “The sky is blue” or “The soup smells delicious.”

When two or more adjectives describe the same noun, they are usually separated by commas or the word and. For example: “She wore a long, flowing dress” or “He was tired and hungry.”

Using adjectives well is an important writing skill. Well-chosen adjectives help readers picture exactly what the writer means. This worksheet gives students practice identifying adjectives and using them to make their own sentences more vivid and precise.
