About this worksheet

An adjective describes a noun, telling what kind, which one, or how many, while an adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb and often ends in -ly. This worksheet sharpens the distinction students need to use describing words correctly, since the same root can become either part of speech.

Section A names a word in a short phrase (in ‘a quick fox,’ the word ‘quick’; in ‘ran quickly,’ the word ‘quickly’) and asks whether it is an adjective or an adverb. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘a tall tree’ and ‘runs fast’, phrases not reused in the items.

Section B asks students what each part of speech describes, the common adverb ending, and to use ‘slowly’ in a sentence and find the verb it describes. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward correct word choice and grammar.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘does it describe a noun, or an action?’ for each example.

Complete Section A independently – have students find the word the named word describes.

Work Section B item 12 together: use ‘slowly’ in a sentence and identify the verb.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Identifying Adjectives Worksheet or the Identifying Adverbs Worksheet for a parts-of-speech mini-unit.
