Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Voice tells whether the subject of a sentence does the action or receives it. In active voice the subject acts and comes first; in passive voice the subject receives the action and the doer comes later or is left out, often with a form of ‘be’ and the word ‘by.’ This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart and switch between them.
Section A gives eight sentences (the chef cooked a meal; the window was broken by the storm) and asks students to write active or passive. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘The dog chased the ball’ and its passive form, sentences not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to explain the difference, rewrite a passive sentence as active, tell why writers prefer active voice, and rewrite an active sentence as passive. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill sharpens clear, direct writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘is the subject doing or receiving the action?’ for each example.
Complete Section A independently – have students find the subject and the action first.
Work Section B item 10 together: rewrite a passive sentence as active.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Verb Tenses Worksheet or the Subject-Verb Agreement Worksheet for a verbs mini-unit.
