Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Nouns come in two kinds. A concrete noun names something you can experience with your senses – chair, dog, pizza. An abstract noun names an idea, feeling, or quality you cannot touch or see directly – love, freedom, courage. Both are real nouns, but one is an object and the other is an idea. This worksheet teaches students to tell them apart.
Section A lists eight nouns (bravery, table, friendship, elephant, freedom, sandwich) and asks students to label each abstract or concrete, balanced four and four. The reference box defines both with chair/dog and love/freedom examples and the can-you-sense-it test but uses none of the Section A nouns.
Section B asks students to classify two more nouns, supply one abstract and one concrete noun of their own, answer whether an abstract noun can be touched, and classify ‘courage.’ Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens noun understanding and supports precise writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and sort a few quick nouns into concrete and abstract together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘can I sense this with my body, or is it an idea?’
Work Section B item 11 together: a student supplies one abstract noun of their own.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Common and Proper Nouns Worksheet or the Collective Nouns Worksheet for a noun mini-unit.
