About this worksheet
An absolute phrase is a noun plus a participle (an -ing or -ed word) that modifies the whole sentence rather than a single word, such as ‘The game over, the fans went home.’ It is set off with a comma and can usually be moved. This worksheet helps students recognize absolute phrases and tell them apart from other word groups.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences, and students decide yes or no whether each contains an absolute phrase. The reference box teaches the structure with different examples, so the assessed items stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to name the two parts of an absolute phrase, explain what it modifies, pick one out of a sentence, and write one of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on participial phrases and appositives.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out the noun and the participle in each example.
Complete Section A independently – have students look for a noun plus an -ing or -ed word set off by a comma.
Discuss how an absolute phrase modifies the whole sentence, not one word.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
