Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Use ‘a’ before a consonant sound and ‘an’ before a vowel sound, because it is the sound, not the letter, that decides. This worksheet teaches the rule, including tricky cases like ‘an hour’ and ‘a university.’

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box states the rule with examples. Section A has eight fill-in-the-blank sentences. Section B on page 2 has four short questions.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. The worksheet pairs well with the Articles and Common and Proper Nouns worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and review the a/an rule.

Fill in ‘a’ or ‘an’ in the eight sentences in Section A on page 1.

Answer the four short questions in Section B on page 2.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Articles Worksheet for more practice.
