GETTING TO KNOW THE TREES LESSON
Directions:
Print the Getting to Know the Trees reading
comprehension passage and questions (see
below).
Students should read the passage
silently, then answer the questions. Teachers may also use the text as
part of a classroom lesson plan.
Lesson Plan
1. Have students take turns reading the passage aloud, discussing interesting points, and answering questions.
2. Have students work in pairs to complete the worksheet. You might like to have them do this outside, referring to trees in the area.
3. Lead an open discussion about the answers.
Lesson Excerpt
How many trees did you see on your way to school today? How many different kinds? How tall was the tallest tree? Do you know the names of any of them?
Did you know that the tallest tree in the world is 370 feet tall? If you could walk up the trunk of that tree, you would have to take about 220 steps to reach the top of it!
The widest tree in the world is 37 feet wide. That's the length of about four cars! It would take about 30 first-graders holding hands to give that tree a giant group hug!
Did you know that some trees live for several thousand years? (continued...)
