SAFETY AND FIRST AID LESSON

Directions:

Print the Safety and First Aid reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions.  Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

Exercise:

A suggestion for learning about Safety and First Aid is to have an emergency person come to the class and talk about what they do at the scene of an accident. If the class is small enough, many times they will let the students climb into a first aid vehicle.

You may want to show them a first aid kit and how each item is used. Showing the student how to wrap a gauze bandage around an arm, or applying ointment with a Q-tip will teach them the importance of staying as germ free as possible.

Lesson Excerpt:
Accidents are caused by being careless. Accidents can hurt or injure us for a long time. Different accidents can lead to scrapes and scratches while other accidents can result in broken bones. Injuries take time to heal and get better.

Accidents may happen anywhere and at any time. We should be careful so we can avoid accidents from happening. We can do this by being cautious and thinking before we do something. There are many safety rules and procedures that will help us prevent accidents.

AT HOME

Knives, blades, and scissors are sharp items around the house. They can be dangerous and harmful if they not used in a safe manner. So we need to be careful while using them. We also need to watch while other people are using them so they are careful.

Things around the house that are hot and can burn or cause an injury are stoves, irons, and matches. Things we like to see on the 4th of July such as fireworks are also dangerous. They should be used only by an adult, or with adult supervision.

Things that are electrical can also lead to danger. Light sockets, light bulbs, and plug-ins can give you electric shocks that are very harmful if you play with them or stick something into them. Sticking something into an electrical outlet, other then a plug can even kill us. (continued...)
