Lesson Excerpt
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. It is about 36 million miles from the sun. Mercury is one of the five planets we can see with our eyes. It is very hard to see because it orbits so near the sun. It orbits quickly, making the trip in only 88 Earth-days. A year is the time it takes a planet to orbit the sun. Therefore, a year on Mercury is 88 days long! The Romans noticed what a speedy traveler this little planet was. They named it for their messenger god with winged sandals.
