An introductory music lesson.
 

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC:
NOTE VALUES, REST VALUES, AND TIME SIGNATURES

This music lesson will introduce note values, rest values, and time signatures to the student. Includes printable teaching reading comprehension lesson worksheets.

 

Objectives:

  • Define note value.  Illustrate whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note and sixteenth note.
  • Define rest.  Illustrate whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest, and sixteenth rest
  • Define time signature.  Illustrate 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures.

Directions:

Print the Note Values, Rest Values, and Time Signatures reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

 

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions.  Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

You were introduced to notes in a prior lesson.  Recall that notes are little pieces of sound.  You are now going to learn about note value.  Note value tells us how long a note will be held.  We can tell what the value of a note is by how the note looks.
