Lesson Excerpt
Dinosaurs were the only creatures on the planet 200 million years ago. When the dinosaurs walked on the earth there were no people living on the planet yet. These gigantic creatures are dead now. In fact, they have been dead for about 65 million years. Dinosaurs were by far the biggest creatures to walk the earth.
Dinosaurs had four legs. Some dinosaurs walked on all four legs but some of them walked on two. These dinosaurs walked like a kangaroo or a person would walk on just two legs. There were hundreds of different kinds of dinosaurs. Like there are different, races and nationalities of people there were different kinds of dinosaurs, too. Today we are able to distinguish the types of dinosaurs there were based on the skeletons that scientists find and study.
Despite the fact that there were hundreds of types of dinosaurs, they did not all live on the planet at the same time. There were periods where certain dinosaurs would become extinct and new breeds of dinosaurs would develop from there.
Scientists have named three periods when dinosaurs roamed the earth. The first dinosaurs lived during the Triassic period. The second period dinosaurs lived during was the Jurassic period. The last period the dinosaurs lived during was the Cretaceous period.
